From Strength To Strength
The highs and lows in this sector, especially in India is common knowledge, both in terms of business and recruitment. This sector is marked by special skill-sets like innovation, drive and the flexibility to adapt to changing market conditions, capture new business opportunities and expand to new geographic markets. This is also the sector which makes the world look like a really small place, with talent being exchanged across the globe seamlessly.
Communication skills, team working, problem anticipation, analytical thinking and logical problem-solving ability are fundamental to all IT jobs. Nowadays, companies are looking towards more proactive people at the top that can turn around small businesses to global ones, and therefore limited knowledge in IT is not a dissuader all the time.
Similar to the profile requirements in this sector, executive search also follows the paradigms of dynamism, global domain knowledge and updated information. In fact, EA offers one of the best teams in terms of domain knowledge and out-performer track record in this industry in India. For the past decade - coincidentally also the time that It has gone through a sea-change in this country - EA has brought in international expertise (especially Asian IT experience) in the choice of top executives and their retention, in this highly volatile sector.
CECA -
An opportunity for Indian IT and Services Professionals to go global
Indian Government and Singapore Government have signed the much awaited comprehensive Economic Cooperation (CECA). This is India's first such agreement with any country and also the first bilateral agreement in the services domain. Not only will this step boost the business relationship between India and Singapore, it will also catalyze trade in services in the region. The liberalisation of the services sector is expected to improve efficiency across both the economies and the mutual recognition of education degrees will provide new avenues to Indian professionals interested to work in Singapore and around the globe.
An agreement has also been reached on the salary benchmark which would be the criterion for the grant of a visa for Singapore. A list of 127 professional categories have been identified for the grant of a visa.
Outsourced Engineering Services:
A Major Emerging Business Opportunity
What used to be predominantly considered a part of R&D services or engineering BPO for Indian companies, has now emerged into a broader, independent Engineering Services segment, based on the significant growth in this market and the rapid evolution of solution suppliers in this space.
The worldwide market for outsourced engineering design services is expected to touch US$ 123.9 billion in 2006. The US engineering BPO market alone is expected to reach US$ 63.7 billion by 2006. The value of work currently undertaken by India-based vendors in this space is around US$ 400-500 million, indicating the untapped opportunity that still exists for the companies playing in this market.
Broadly speaking, the key services being provided by Indian outsourcing companies are in the areas of electronic and mechanical Product Design (engineering analysis and design, electronics and embedded software, knowledge-based engineering, PLM solutions); Plant design/process engineering (detailed design, construction and commissioning support); plant automation services (control system integration, production optimization, manufacturing execution systems) and enterprise Asset Management (TPM solutions, product implementation and OEM solutions).
Automotive design is stated to represent the largest chunk of this market, accounting for around 65-70 percent of the revenues generated through outsourced engineering services. Automotive companies invest around 3-5 percent of their annual revenues in R&D, which in turn is centered around engineering design. The aerospace segment is the other high potential vertical, contributing around 15-16 percent of the total revenues of the outsourced engineering services pie, with electric/electronic machinery design pitching with 10-12 percent. Other verticals that are outsourcing their engineering services include utilities, equipment manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies.
